On-Island Transportation: Your Top 3 Options
How should you get around after buying a home in Hawaii?
Cars
Cars are the most popular means of transportation, but just like anywhere else, you need a drivers license. If you're moving to Hawaii internationally, then to drive you can use your license from your own Country, and an international license. If you live in the United States, then your state's license will work the same.
In order to get a Hawaii Drivers license you will need to surrender your other license, and you will be issued a new license.
Rent: If you want to start off by renting a car then there are a few requirements. You must be at least 25 years old, a licensed driver, have insurance and a major credit card in your name. That's all and you're good to go.
Move your Car Overseas: A lot of people find that moving their vehicle overseas is the best option. Depending on where you are coming from, the price varies. Just to give you a general idea, from Los Angeles to Honolulu it should be around $1,000. It's a small price to pay to avoid the hassles of buying, selling, and renting.
Buy: If you are ready to move on, and get a new vehicle along with your new home on Oahu, then you can definitely do it. We have all the luxury car dealers here that you are used to such as: Mercedes Benz, Lamborghini, Lexus, BMW, or whatever you may want. There are also several places you can go to get used cars that are in great condition.
Cars may be the most popular source of transportation on Oahu, but there are more options that many people use and enjoy. As you get settled into your new home on Oahu you'll figure out what works best for you.
The Bus
The bus is such an incredible way to travel here on Oahu. The bus service is spectacular. It is Hawaii's public transportation system, and it runs island-wide every day.
There is a bus stop on practically every street corner, and a new bus comes to pick you up every 30 minutes. Ultra convenient!
Individual rides are only $2.00 and you receive a transfer. The transfer is valid for 4-5 hours and you can use it to either transfer buses to reach your destination, or return to your home on Oahu if your trip is under 5 hours.
You could even purchase a monthly bus pass for only $40.00 and have unlimited bus rides, and enjoy the perks of moving to Hawaii. There is also the "visitor’s pass" option. It is $20.00 and is valid for 4 consecutive days of unlimited use.
Riding The Bus is a great way to save money, and give you a rest from driving back and forth to your home on Oahu.
The Boat
The Boat is another branch of The Bus. It is a brand new service that is available mornings and evenings Monday through Friday.
It takes you from downtown Honolulu (Waikiki) to Barber's Point at Kapolei in just one hour.
You are able to take a beautiful scenic trip down Oahu's south shore and spend a day in a whole new town and environment.
I prefer to use it as my means of transportation to get to and from work. I get to beat the traffic, save money, and enjoy my ride to work.
You have the choice of sitting inside at a table and watching the view through the windows, or sitting outside in the fresh air with the wind blowing through your hair.
The schedule is set for three morning runs and three afternoon runs.
The fare is only two dollars, just like the bus, and The Bus conveniently rides down to The Boat's dock, so you can continue on to your precise destination.
Transportation on Oahu is set up for your convenience. Not only do you get your paradise home on Oahu that you have always dreamed of but you can also get around the island.
